Why should I invest in my own coach, I can coach myself!
I’ve had a couple conversations covering this topic recently. One of the main things I see with coaches is that we have a huge block around investing in ourselves. Two of the main objections I hear are: I don’t have the time and I don’t have the money. And while it’s true, especially for newer coaches, that there probably isn’t a lot of extra cash laying around, and you certainly are busy running your business, the issue goes much much deeper.
Limiting Belief
Somewhere along the way we picked up the belief that we are not worth investing in ourselves on an ongoing basis and we don’t recognize the value and necessity of doing so. Someone told us that after we invested in our coach training everything else had to be done on our own. After all isn’t that what being an entrepreneur is all about? Going it alone, coaching, mentoring, motivating, learning, doing it all for ourselves? Or, maybe the thinking is we have to be making a ton of money to invest in our own coaching and mentoring, that is will happen “Someday” when we are successful and not until then. Well I’m here to tell you that is all a crock and a limiting belief that sets us up for failure not success.
The Pickle
The same reasons you see prospects saying no are the same reasons we’re saying no. Either we feel we won’t benefit enough paying someone else because we can do it ourselves, or we tell ourselves we’re not worth spending the money on. And we keep telling ourselves this week after week. Month after month. All the time struggling to get our business organized, our marketing planned, prospects in the pipeline, sales conversations set up and conversions happening. We spend a lot of time researching, buying courses on this and that, hoping the next one will give us the answers or strategies we need. Telling ourselves one day I’ll be able to have help, one day I’ll figure it out. I’ll make the leap and get my own coach. One day this, one day that. We go round and round and finally become burnt out.
But it doesn’t have to be that way. When we want something for ourselves we find the resources. We make it work. Why wouldn’t we do the same for our business? Ask yourself this “How can we as coaches ask others to invest in themselves to grow and be successful if we aren’t willing to do it for ourselves?” What kind of message does that send to our heart, our soul, to the universe, to our prospects?
My Experience
A couple of weeks ago I was talking to a family member (we’ll call him Peter). I was describing my current coach and how I made the leap of faith to stretch myself financially with a higher end coach because it was time for my business to stretch. Peter asked me what the particulates were and I shared. Well to say Peter was flabbergasted would be an understatement. He thought it was so unbelievable that I would pay that “astronomical amount” (it’s not) to someone who does what I do (they do, at a higher level). Peter was arguing that I coach others to build their business, why am I not just coaching myself to build my own? Why was I “wasting” my money and time on something I can do for myself? Here was and is my answer.
My Answer
I coach and mentor others to gain awareness about themselves, their business, their values and the actions they have to take to grow in business and in life. We plan, organize, and implement. I help hold them accountable and to hold themselves accountable to taking structured action. Partly I am a sounding board, an outsider with a different perspective to bounce ideas off of or to look at a problem with a different lens. I am focused on my client, not the noise going on around them. My attention is on them, nothing else. They deserve all that from their coach. And guess what? SO. DO. I. I can’t do all that for myself. At least not to the degree it’s needs to be for my business to grow where I want it to!
